Marine Detachment?

Posted on Mon Feb 24th, 2020 @ 10:30pm by Lieutenant JG Kevin Lance

I have a question about the Marine Detachment positions.

In the 21st Century U.S. Navy, Marine Detachments are the primary security force on larger ship. Think about Checkov being chased through the carrier Enterprise in Star Trek IV.

The Independence has both a Security Division and a Marine Detachment. Is the Marine Detachment responsible for ship board security? Or are they for off-ship force projection?

My understanding has always been as you describe it. Security is responsible for ship board protection and marines are deployed in the field off ship.
