Mission:
By Odin!
Location: USS Independence
Timeline: Current
Lieutenant JG Lance reviewed the data on the upcoming mission. While his subordinates were enjoying off-duty time on the station, the Chief Tactical Officer was holed up in his office with a mug of his beloved Kona blend coffee, pouring over the reports on his PADD. He considered the requirements for providing covering fire for a convoy of vessels and lamented that the mission profile was light with regards to the, he had to check his notes, Odinskusinerdreimalentferntwurdier ships. Lieutenant O’Connell was off duty but Kevin was determined to consult with the Chief Engineering before the next shift.
Kevin was about to call the engineer when the intercom with his yeoman buzzed. “Lieutenant, you have a visitor from the Federation Diplomatic Corp,” Yeoman Mila Nakada said.
“Thank you, Mila,” Kevin replied, “Please show them in.”
The door to Kevin’s office opened and in stepped a burly, if short, male humanoid. Kevin couldn’t place the man’s species but he look close to human, excepting the pronounced canine teeth and sideburns that extended down his neck, spreading across his shoulders and under the collar of his tunic. When he spoke, his voice was in a higher register than Kevin would have assumed. “Good afternoon, Lieutenant,” the man addressed Kevin, “Or is it evening?”
“Morning actually. We are still synchronizing our ship’s day to Starfleet standard after shore leave on Risa," Kevin replied gesturing to a chair in front of his desk, “ What can I do for you?”
“I am Gav Delai,” he man said taking the proffered chair, “Head of Ambassadors Baer’s entourage. I wish to discuss requirements for the upcoming diplomatic mission with you. I would have discuss them with you Executive Officer but he appears to have left the ship.”
"Commander Silk was recalled to Headquarters," Kevin explained.
Gav Delai sent a file to the big board in the CTO's office. Kevin pulled the file onto his PADD and read the contents. "In the absence of an executive officer," Kevin commented,"Lieutenant Balrog, the Chief Operations Officer, would address most of these issues."
"I knew that," Gav replied, "but I couldn't find him."
Did you try his quarters? Kevin thought to himself as he continued reading through the requirements for the diplomatic mission. As he read through the security requirements, Kevin had to stop and reread several sections in disbelief. Finally, he expressed his incredulity, "Surely the ambassador isn't serious."
Gav wasn't flustered by Kevin's outburst, "He is quite serious."
"But these honors and demands aren't usually observed," Kevin objected, "Reception Ceremony? Marine Honor Guard? A dedicated space for the Ambassador to entertain? I don't think that these have been observed on a Star Fleet vessel since before I was at the Academy."
"They are still in Star Fleet regulations," Gav commented.
"They are," Kevin conceded, "but the are rather archaic."
"Nevertheless, they are the Ambassador's wishes," Gav replied standing up, "I suggest that you discuss these requirements with your Captain. And I would hurry if I were you. The Ambassador is impatient to embark."
Don't worry, Kevin seethed, I will be discussing these preposterous requirements with her.
"Good Day, Lieutenant," Gav said as he turned on his heel to depart.
"Good Day, Sir."
