A Late Night Call

[Aboard the Independence]

Petty Officer 2nd Class Cory Jaenke, a communications technician aboard the U.S.S. Independence, hesitated as his hands played across the communications panel. The incoming request from Lieutenant Lance had sounded urgent but at this early hour, the Captain had standing orders that he not be disturbed. The Second Officer had the Conn for the mid-watch but Lieutenant Lance had been insistent that he be connected with the Captain. Petty Office Jaenke decided that the Executive Officer would have to do for a lieutenant junior grade.

As Jaenke activated the link to Commander Ellis' comm badge, he hoped that he wouldn't be waking her. "Commander Ellis," he intoned into his mouthpiece, "I have an incoming communique from Lieutenant Lance."

Mystery tapped her com-badge took a seat at her desk in her quarters "Patch it through here,"

There was a pause as Jaenke linked to the two communication streams together, then Lieutenant Lance's voice came though, "Captain Hellion, this is Lieutenant Lance."

"This is Commander Ellis, the captain is unavailable. I'm the first officer how can I be of assistance?"

"Ma'am. Myself, Commander Relor, and Mr Jefferson were involved in an altercation with Klingons aboard the starbase," Kevin reported, "Mr Thomas is in the infirmary and Commander Relor has been detained by starbase security."

"What kind of altercation?" Mystery asked "You also know it's not wise to tangle with the Klingons."

"Yes, ma'am," Kevin replied, "but the Klingons seemed determined. Mr Jefferson ran into one of the Klingons, who took offense. I tried to deescalate the situation but an unfortunate comment from Mr Jefferson provoke him to attack. A fight ensued and Mr. Thomas was stabbed."

"I'll deal with that when he's back and on his feet. How bad is it? Inform base security that I'll beam over," Mystery said

"Mr Jefferson has a deep stab wound to the chest," Kevin said, "Dr Relor was able to stabilize him and cauterize the wound before the base's medical personnel took over. I gave a statement and was just released by security. Dr Relor, however, is being held for the homicide of two of the Klingons."

"What the hell!" Mystery fumed "Were there any witnesses to this? Doctor Relor would not kill anyone, the only way he'd do it like any of us in self defense. I want you back aboard and I'm beaming over I want to talk to base security over this."

"Aye, ma'am," Kevin replied.
