Ensign Valentina Ferrón entered the science department of the USS Independence and asked to see Lieutenant Curillo.

"Hello Ensign. How may I be of assistance?" Ares greeted.

"I am the Strategic Operations Officer assigned to prepare the mission orders for the upcoming diplomatic escort," Valentina explained, "I have need to consult with one of your sociologists about the Odinskusinerdreimal..." She had stumbled over the name of the race and eventually trailed off without completing the word.

"As for Odinskusinerdreimal? What are your questions specifically Ensign?" Ares paused.

"Information on the...race in the database is sparse and much of it is contradictory," the Ensign explained, "They appear to be descendants of Nordic colonists from the first Earth diaspora in the early twenty-first century. Pyxis Alpha was surveyed in 2359 and at the time the Odinskus…were in a pre-industrial state. The Federation applied a non-contact restriction on the system and all additional information is from interpretations of data from passive sensors deployed in high orbit around Pyxis Alpha V, most of which have exceeded their operational life. They first demonstrated interplanetary travel capability about twenty years ago with the first warp signatures detected last year. The Federation sent out a first contact team that has been working with the…ah…for two months. I was hoping to get a sociologist's help in organizing the data for the mission briefing.”

"Intriguing report. By all means seek out the sociological officer. You seem to have all this,figured out." Ares replied.

"Thank you, sir," the Ensign smiled at the compliment as she stood to depart the office. At the doorway, she paused to add, "One thing puzzles me. How did they go from pre-industrial to warp capable in a century and a quarter?"

" I would speculate a contaminate was introduced either by accident or on purpose by outside means. An M16 A 1 rifle with sufficient rounds would have changed the Earth civil war in the 19th century." Ares added.

"That would make sense," Valentina replied. She wasn't certain what impact an M16A1 rifle would have had on the many nineteenth century wars on Earth but she understood what the Lieutenant was alluding to.

" Ensign let me,know how this turns out. I am intrigued." Ares added.

"Yes, sir," Valentina replied, then turned to find the sociologist.
