Priority One

Posted on Mon Aug 8th, 2022 @ 8:00am by Commander Robert Hardwicke

Mission: Shakedown
Location: USS Independence
Timeline: Current

Commander Hardwick believed that no detail was beneath the notice of a Ship’s Captain. With impulse and warp testing complete, he was able to shift his attention to more mundane operations. Thus he found himself in the ship’s main galley inspecting replicators and discussing menus with a nutritionalist from the medical staff. As expected, Lieutentant Balrog was nowhere to be found when while the Captain was checking an area under the responsibility of the Chief Operations Officer.

Robert was in the middle of a discussion with the medical ensign about the balances of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the meals that the crew members most often eat when his comm badge chirped. After a short apology to the ensign, Robert tapped his comm badge and announced his name.

“Captain, you have a priority-one message,” replied the voice of Petty Officer Jaenke, one of the ship’s communication specialist.

The ship was still six weeks away from Starbase 10 at cruising warp. Robert didn’t anticipate any communications from the gaining command until they were much closer. His curiosity peaked he said, “Pipe it down to the main gallery on deck 8.”

“Apologies, sir,” the communications specialist responded, “but the message is marked Captain’s Eyes Only.”

Robert grimaced. This was not going to be good news. “Very well,” he replied, “I will take it in my Ready Room. Hardwicke out.”

He thanked the ensign promising to finish their conversation at his next opportunity then departed the galley heading for the turbolift.
