Location: Mystery's Office

ON:

Mystery read the service record of the new strategic operations officer and tapped her com-badge "Commander Gillespie this is the captain can you come to my ready room?"

Over the communicator, Gillespie replies, "Understood. On my way."

A few moments later, the ready room door chimed.

"Enter."

In walks Commander Gillespie. He stands crisply at attention with his orders in his hand. "Commander Gillespie reports as ordered."

"Welcome aboard commander," Mystery said "I'm Captain Ellis. At ease commander and please have a seat."

"Thank you, sir." Gillespie takes the chair in front of the Captain's desk, a little uncomfortable.

"Relax commander," Mystery said "I've read your service record and I'm lucky to have you here. How was your flight out?"

"Apologies, Captain. It's been a while since I've had to report in to a new commanding officer." He relaxes a bit. "The flight was great. It was nice to come through Starbase 10, again. I haven't been here since I was a kid."

The discomfort returns to Gillespie's face. Small talk...

"This is my first time at this starbase and I have to admit I've not had time to go over to the base," Mystery commented "When was the last time you reported to a new commanding officer," Mystery asked "I assure you I don't bite."

"Again, my apologies. I was on board the Belknap since right after... I've been on the Belknap for seven years. Captain Ortega became a mentor to me. He saw me for who I was and what I could be."

Gillespie shifted in his seat and continued. "Captain, if I may be blunt, and I hope I can be as that will be the best route for our relationship, I was a bit shocked by the transfer orders and the leap in responsibility. You, see, my grandfather is the commander of Starbase 140. I love him very much and he loves me. But, he's tried to meddle in my career in Starfleet since I went to the Academy. He's been trying to help even harder since my father was lost on the Ticonderoga. Dad was the first Gillespie in almost a hundred years to not be an admiral..."

Gillespie's communicator chimed. "Commander Gillespie, the Chief Tactical Officer is here to see you." He tapped his comm badge to reply. "Understood. I'm still meeting with the Captain. I will see Lieutenant Lance as soon as I am done here." Gillespie straightened himself in his chair. "Sir, Captain Ortega was the first officer not to be wowed by the Gillespie name. He allowed me to make mistakes and to learn from them. A few of those mistakes had a high cost to them, but they made me a better officer. I do not want to be known on the Independence as Commander Charles Gillespie the Seventh, grandson of Admiral Charles Gillespie the Fifth and who knows how many greats grandson of a Commander Starfleet from over a century ago. I want to build my reputation as Commander Chuck Gillespie, Chief Strategic Operations Officer of the USS Independence."

Mystery knew he was uneasy talking to her. "I'm afraid the name Gillespie is unknown to me," Mystery commented "But in any case I don't treat anyone differently just because they have an important relative. It seems Lieutenant Lance needs to speak to you so I'll let you go. Thank you for coming to see me."

"Thank you, Captain. I am looking forward to serving with you."

"Likewise," Mystery said "Your free to go."
